Premier League: Nine games into the EPL season, and Mohamed Salah is the continent’s top scorer in the world’s grandest league. The Egyptian forward—a new signing from AS Roma—is fast proving that Chelsea were wrong to let him go. Salah has five in nine so far this season, putting him one ahead of Africa’s next contender—Watford’s Franco-Malian midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure—and three behind the league’s top scorer Harry Kane.

Serie A: Four African players are on two goals in the Italian top flight, but none of them can really be considered genuine contenders for the division’s golden boot! Defenders Faouzi Ghoulam and Bastos have both weighed in with important strikes, while Franck Kessie has two in 10 since moving to AC Milan. Perhaps the continent’s most unlikely scorer in the division is Adel Taarabt, who’s enjoying something of a renaissance at Genoa.

Eredivisie: Two unheralded Moroccan talents are Africa’s current top scorers in the division at the time of writing. Youness Mokhtar has five in nine for PEC Zwolle, while Mimoun Mahi of FC Groningen has the same record. Striker has been a problem position for Herve Renard during his Atlas Lions’ tenure; could either of these forwards boost the North Africans’ attack in Russia?

La Liga: Second only to Lionel Messi in the Spanish top flight is Villarreal’s Cedric Bakambu. The Democratic Republic of Congo frontman has eight in eight so far this term, one of which came at home against Las Palmas this weekend, when he opened the scoring in a 4-0 victory. Most impressive for the former Bursaspor frontman was his hat-trick performance in the 3-0 demolition of Eibar.

Russian Premier League: Sylvester Igboun has dropped out of the Super Eagles picture over the last 18 months, but his fine form in Russia so far this term may yet see him make a late run into Gernot Rohr’s World Cup plans. He has three in 14 for unfashionable FC Ufa this term, making him Africa’s top scorer in the RPL.

Chinese Premier League: We’re approaching the end of the CSL season, and so it appears highly unlikely that any of the continent’s stars will top Eran Zahavi’s 26 goals In 28 outings. However, Odion Ighalo has bounced back from his troubles at Watford to net 15 in 26 for Changchun Yatai. He’s level with Gambian forward Bubacarr ‘Steve’ Trawally of Yanbian.

Championship: Middlesbrough placed their faith in Congolese forward Britt Assombalonga being the man to fire them back to the Premier League when they spent big to sign him from Nottingham Forest during the summer. So far, the ex-Peterborough attacker has largely avoided the injury problems that have affected his career to date, to score six in 13. Could he yet fire Boro back to the top table?

Major League Soccer: He hasn’t found the net in recent weeks, but Ghana’s David Accam has been one of Africa’s most impressive MLS players this term. He scored 14 in 27 for Chicago Fire during the regular MLS season, and could yet add to his total during the playoffs.

Super Lig: Despite boasting two of Africa’s most famous frontmen of this century—Emmanuel Adebayor and Samuel Eto’o—two of the continent’s less heralded stars are ahead of them in the scoring charts. Ivorian veteran Arouna Kone is enjoying life at Sivasspor, and currently has four goals—and two assists—in nine league outings. He’s tied with Congolese forward Dzon Delarge—currently at Bursaspor—who has four in eight. It’s worth noting, as well, that the latter has played just 489 minutes, compared to Kone’s 780.

Bundesliga: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is the reigning Bundesliga top scorer, and is on course to win the honour again this season. The Gabon hitman won’t be going to the World Cup, but he remains one of Europe’s most feared forwards, after netting 10 in nine so far this campaign.

Ligue 1: In a division packed with African talents, there are relatively few who are truly prolific in front of goal. The continent’s top scorer so far this term is Clinton N’Jie, who’s already netted more than he managed in the whole of last season with Olympique de Marseille. Nonetheless, his five strikes puts him well behind top scorer Falcao, on 13.

Primeira Liga: In Portugal, two of the continent’s star forwards are vying for the top scorer gong. Vincent Aboubakar and Moussa Marega dovetail superbly up top for FC Porto—with Olivier Torres and Alex Telles supplying the bullets—and each have seven in nine so far this term. Benfica’s Brazilian attacker Jonas currently has 11 in nine.

Eliteserien: Over in Norway, it’s a Ghanaian midfielder who’s the continent’s top scorer. Gilbert Koomson has struggled to assert himself with the Black Stars so far during his early international career, but he deserves more consideration after scoring seven in 26 so far this term. His goals have been critical in keeping strugglers Sogndal just above the dropzone.
