Yoruba Culture's Entrenchment: Ooni Unveils 'Drum of Peace' for the Universe

In continuation of his entrenchment of Yoruba cultural values since he mounted the throne of his forefathers, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja 11,  has given a new meaning to one of the Yoruba traditional values by unveiling the 'Drum of Peace' programme for the universe.

in order to deepen the cultural heritage.

Oba Ogunwusi made this known on Tuesday, during the unveiling of the programme organised by Ayangalu Team in Ile-Ife, Osun State.

According to the highly revered monarch the vicious sound of many drums beating together is meant to stir up emotions during a battle or war with a view to inspiring excitement and passion.

The monarch ascertained that drum epitomises peace anywhere it is being used, be it in the household, councils, States, countries, continent of Africa, black race or the entire world.

He stated further that drum is one of the veritable tools for the creation of peace, deepening of cultural values, and unity in the olden days which in his words can still be useful for the Yoruba race nowadays.

The amiable monarch added that African drums hold a special place in the history of Africa, adding that, in western culture, drumming is intertwined with entertainment.

In his words,  'drum adds to the musical quality of a song,  deeper symbolic and historical meaning which is played in any manner of ceremonies such as births, deaths, marriages together with a ritual dance'.

Oba Ogunwusi pledged his support for Ayanagalu team to take the dream throughout the universe, while appealing to all and sundry to value their culture and traditions.

Earlier, the Ambassador of Drum of Peace, Mrs Aralola Olamuyiwa, a professional drummer, lauded the royal father for being a lover of peace.

Mrs. Olamuyiwa noted that Ooni of Ife has been promoting unity among the traditional rulers since his investiture into his forefathers stool.

She said that drum plays a significant role in every part of Yorubaland, for it creates awareness and boosts Yoruba culture.

"Drum is very unique as a means of communication in the olden days and its impact among Africans cannot be over emphasised".

Among the drums that contributed to the tradition and cultural values are: Omele, Iya-Ilu, bata and gangan among others.

Also, the Project Director for the Drum of Peace, Mr Daramola Morakinyo, lamented the difficulties the group had been facing for the past ten years in their bid to promote Yoruba culture.

Morakinyo opined that the cooperation of the monarch would energise the group with a view to promoting "Drum of Peace" globally.
