Boxer Mike Towell, 25, dies in hospital after being knocked out in bout
Scottish boxer Mike Towell has died in hospital after a fight on Thursday night left him with severe bleeding to the brain.
The 25-year-old was taken from the ring on a stretcher in the fifth round of his fight with Dale Evans on Thursday evening.
The Dundee fighter hit the canvas twice during the bout and was knocked out in the fifth following a brutal left hook.
Towell, a father of one, entered the British welterweight title eliminator as an unbeaten fighter, winning 11 of his previous bouts and drawing one.
After the fight Evans described the Scot as a ‘true warrior’ and the tributes have been pouring in since Towell’s management confirmed his passing.
Towell’s partner, Chloe Ross, said the boxer had ‘fought to the end’ in a touching post on social media.
‘I’m absolutely heartbroken to say my annoying best friend passed away tonight at 11.02 very peacefully,’ Ross wrote.
‘Michael had severe bleeding and swelling to his brain. He had been complaining of headaches for the last few weeks but we put it down to migraines with the stress of his fight.
‘It has been the longest 24 hours of our lives. My baby has lost his daddy. But he will be so so proud of his dad in what he achieved.
‘Once he was taken off of his life support he managed 12 hours, 12 whole rounds off his life support, he fought right to the end and he’s done us atbe
Tributes from the Boxing world have been flooding in for Towell since the announcement, with the likes of Nick Blackwell and Eddie Hearn paying their respects.
