Amateur boxer, 17, collapses and dies in the ring after match


A 17-year-old amateur boxer collapsed and died in the ring after a match. Ed Bilbey, from Ripley, Derbyshire, was treated by paramedics at a leisure centre in South Normanton at 10.17pm last night. Police are now appealing for any footage of the fight which was held at Post Mill Centre. Touching tributes have flooded in to the young boxer, who was a member of Somercotes Elite Boxing Academy. His brother, Henry, posted a picture of himself with Ed, adding the caption ‘love you’.

He pronounced dead on arrival at hospital

Derbyshire Police said a postmortem will take place in the next few days. A police spokesman said: ‘At this stage there don’t appear to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding this death. ‘If you were at the tournament and have any footage of the bout or information that might help, please contact Detective Sergeant Debbie Yoxall on 101, quoting incident number 1162 of March 24.’
