Indian hemp smoker bags 6 months jail term in Osun
A 41 year old smoker, Waidi Adelabu has been sentenced to six months imprisonment by an Osogbo Magistrate Court for displaying and smoking publicly, wraps of Indian hemp also known as cannabis sativa.
Magistrate Olusola Aluko, convicted and sentenced Adelabu on self admittance to the offence committed.
Briefing the court, Police prosecutor, Elisha Olusegun said the convict publicly displayed the hemp in a manner likely to cause breach of public peace.
Olusegun further explained that the convict had in his possession, two other wraps of Indian hemp on the day he was arrested.
The offence, according to prosecutor was contrary to and punishable under Sections 249(d) and 430(1) of the Criminal Code cap 34, volume II, Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002.
When his charges were read to him, the accused pleaded guilty to the offence slammed against him.
Defense council, Barrister Kazeem Badmus appealed to the court to be lenient in its judgment as the convict person deeply regrets his action and has no previous criminal record.
Handling down his judgment, Magistrate Aluko convicted and sentenced Adelabu to six months imprisonment or a fine option of N10,000.
