Revealed: Why MTN Sacked 15% of Its Nigerian Workforce
It is no longer news that the telecommunications giant, MTN sacked 15.6% of its entire 1,800 Nigerian workforce on May Day.
Glitter News online findings revealed that since the telecomuniccation has made a payment of N30 billion ($98 million) to the Nigerian government in part settlement of an N330 billion fine imposed on the telecoms group for not disconnecting unregistered SIM cards has been one of the major reason why some workers are being relieved from their jobs.
According to one of the affected staff who spoke on condition of anonymity told Glitter News Online that, “since the part of fine had been paid to the Nigerian government, the company authorities have been finding means to meet up on how to pay the remaining fine to the government and they believe that retrenching some workers is one of the way out.”
According to him “ They believe that (we) Nigerians in the company leaked the information about the unregistered sim cards to the government, although they have been finding ways to sack us, but they just use the opportunity of the debt to retrenched us he added.”
Record shows that most affected staff were said to have put in 5 years and above serving in the telecommunication giant.
